We Are In a Climate Emergency

The climate problem is the most important issue of our time. We are already feeling the effects of climate change, however there is still time to:

• Significantly cut our carbon emissions

• Avoid additional warming

Moreover, along with thousands of other cities from around the world, we declared a climate emergency in 2019 in response to this pressing threat.

Our goals

Following the advice of the international scientific community, we have set goals to:

• Cut our carbon pollution in half by 2030

• Become carbon neutral by 2050.

Taking up the challenge

By rising to this challenge, we have the chance to work together to build a city that is cleaner, safer, more equitable, and resilient.

The science is clear

In order to prevent catastrophic climate change, scientists from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warn that global warming must be kept to 1.5° Celsius. However, the world is currently on track for 3–4° Celsius of warming by the end of the century, and the window for action is rapidly closing.

Cities must take action

Cities, especially those in the global North, are in a good position to make the switch to renewable energy because they account for almost 60% of world emissions from burning fossil fuels.

Take part in bold change

However, to achieve the necessary carbon pollution reduction goal of reducing Vancouver’s carbon pollution, we developed the Climate Emergency Action Plan (CEAP). It lists activities in spheres under our control, including: transportation, buildings, land use planning, infrastructure, and enhancing and safeguarding natural systems.

It asks for ambitious climate legislation, partnerships, and transformational changes in individual behavior.

In Short, We need your help to effect this change. Participate to help us make Vancouver a climate-friendly city.
