To bring the overall amount of military aid to $1 billion, Canada has decided to provide Ukraine an extra $500 million. Some believe the funds should not be funding corporate welfare but rather affordable housing, infrastructure projects, or a return to Canadian taxpayers.
It appears as though Canada and Russia are at war. NATO does not include Ukraine, and this is a mistake. Since the goals for which NATO was created have been superseded, it should be abolished. Gone are the Warsaw Pact and the USSR. Canada ought to remain neutral in the Ukraine war. In his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, Martin Luther King Jr. declared, “I refuse to accept that countries must continue using weapons of mass destruction.” In the end, I think love and honesty will triumph. Because of this, good always triumphs over evil, even when it appears to be losing.
Canada had a reputation for reaching out to nations that were at war and attempting to bring about peace. Lester B. Pearson, the prime minister, won the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating a major conflict in the Middle East. Peacekeeping by Canada’s military was renowned on a global scale. However, we are increasingly being entangled in unnecessary confrontations. It costs more money and lives than Canada can afford.
Canadians have already spent an additional $7 billion on humanitarian relief as a result of the war in Ukraine. Where is this money going, though? And who bears the responsibility for its use? Our community members put together events the previous year to collect money for the war victims in Ukraine. They made it apparent who would receive the funds and how they would be used. These fundraising activities, in my opinion, demonstrated compassion and love, and I’m grateful to reside on Manitoulin Island with such wonderful people.
Currently residing on Manitoulin as refugees are those who left the conflict in Ukraine. They’ve, in my opinion, seized the opportunity and put in a lot of effort to uplift our neighborhood and promote harmony. To stop the war, it would have been preferable if Canada had made an effort to maintain peace in Ukraine. I think we could have succeeded. There is still time for us to assist in putting an end to the war. Additionally, MLK Jr. asserts that one needs to have a strong belief if one is going to have one.
We can assist bring about peace once more, as Canada has done in the past. We should address our domestic problems before engaging in combat with a formidable nation such as Russia. Canada ought to return to its role as a global peacekeeper.
