The City of Prince George wants to remind everyone that there is a provincial fire restriction that makes it illegal to use fireworks in the city.
Due to the potential for fire, there won’t be any fireworks at Connaught Hill Park on Canada Day.
Due to the significant fire risk, campfires and fireworks are not permitted within the Prince George Fire Centre region as of May 19. Fireworks that were supposed to be a part of the Canada Day in the Park celebrations have been canceled, the City of Prince George said on June 23.
Fire Chief Cliff Warner of Prince George said, “We know people want fireworks, especially to celebrate Canada Day, but it just isn’t worth the risk.” “People in northeast British Columbia have already been forced to flee due to wildfires this month, so we need to make sure we’re doing our part and acting responsibly during the summer.”
The fire chief is empowered to impose fireworks restrictions in the interest of public safety under the city’s Fire Protection and Emergency Response Bylaw.
The city reminded all residents on Wednesday that personal fireworks launched on private land are also subject to the Category 1 fire prohibition. People who break the law risk receiving a $1,150 penalty and, if found guilty in court, being hit with fines as high as $100,000.
Warner advised citizens of Prince George to observe Canada Day properly and with consideration for public safety.
This weekend is Canada Day, and while we hope everyone has fun, we want to make sure that no one sets off fireworks on private property, he said.
All other Canada Day in the Park events will go on as scheduled.
