A Prince George man, Smitty Ralph Bent, accused of aggravated assault from an incident on April 24, 2022, has been acquitted. The BC Provincial Court judge ruled that the provided testimony did not conclusively identify Bent as the perpetrator.
The victim alleged that Bent, armed with a shotgun, arrived at his residence, leading to a struggle where he was allegedly attacked with a knife. However, the judge highlighted uncertainties in the victim’s recollection due to shock, drug use, and mental health conditions.
The case focused on the standard of proof required by the courts rather than self-defense. Despite Bent’s arrest for a separate armed robbery, he remains in custody, facing additional assault charges from a 2023 incident
