In June 2024, employment in Canada had a few ups and downs. While the overall number of jobs didn’t change much, some groups saw different results. Let’s explore what happened to jobs, who is working, and how wages changed.
Jobs Stay Mostly the Same
In June, there were only 1,400 fewer jobs in Canada. This means employment was almost unchanged. The employment rate, which shows how many people aged 15 and older have jobs, dropped a little to 61.1%. This is the eighth time in the last nine months that the rate has gone down.
However, when we look at the numbers for the whole year, things have improved. There are 343,000 more jobs compared to last June. The public sector (government jobs) grew faster than the private sector (business jobs). More people are also working for themselves, but it’s still lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Young Men Face Job Challenges
Young men aged 15 to 24 saw a drop in jobs, losing 13,000 positions. On the bright side, women aged 25 to 54 gained 19,000 jobs. Sadly, young people overall are struggling to find work. Their employment rate fell to 54.8%, down from 59.2% last year.
The job situation for young people is tricky. Many are looking for summer jobs but are finding it harder to get hired. The employment rate for returning students was just 46.8%, the lowest it has been since 1998. This means students need to be creative in their job searches!
Wages Are Going Up
Even though jobs are a bit tough to find, wages are increasing. On average, people’s pay went up by 5.4% compared to last year. This is good news for workers! Men’s wages rose a little more than women’s, but both groups are seeing increases.
People in the lowest-paying jobs are also earning more, which is a positive sign. As wages go up, it helps families pay for their needs, even if finding jobs is still a challenge.
Different Jobs Are Changing
In June, there were some big changes in various job sectors:
- Transportation and Warehousing: This industry lost 12,000 jobs, which is the second month in a row of job losses.
- Public Administration: Jobs in this area dropped by 8,800, marking the first decrease since August 2023.
- Accommodation and Food Services: This sector is doing well, adding 17,000 jobs. It shows that more people are dining out and staying in hotels!
- Agriculture: Jobs in farming went up by 12,000, a nice boost after some tough times.
- These changes show that while some industries struggle, others are growing and helping people find work.
To sum up, June 2024 was a mixed month for jobs in Canada. While many young people are having a tough time finding work, there are still opportunities for some groups. Wages are increasing, which is good for families. As we move forward, it’s important to keep an eye on these trends to understand how everyone is doing in the job market.
