If your kids have a spring break and it has turned into a long summer vacation with some not-so-great homeschooling. Now that summer is officially here, and here are some fun ideas to keep your kids entertained in and around Prince George.

Swimming: There are great swimming spots like West Lake and Salmon River, about 25 km from town. West Lake is perfect for little ones with a nice beach and shallow waters. Salmon River is a fun place to explore, and you can float down sections of it in a blow-up boat. Both places offer a nice experience.

The Prince George Farmers’ Market:– It is a special event for my family that happens on Saturday mornings. It’s a place where local people and artists come to show their things. What’s cool about this market is that you can find all kinds of stuff that you like. It’s not just a place to buy food and handmade things. It’s a tradition in our family, and we love it because it’s a great place for the community. You can see, taste, and hear lots of good stuff there. It’s also good for our local businesses. So, the market isn’t just about shopping. It’s a fun and friendly place where you can enjoy the community, find tasty treats, and support local businesses. It’s a great way to spend time with your family while helping your town.

Hiding and Finding Painted Rocks: Explore parks and trails to find hidden painted rocks. It’s a fun activity for kids, and you can even create your own painted rocks at home. Check out the PG Rocks Facebook group for clues on where to find them.

Fishing: There are plenty of places for kids to learn how to fish in and around Prince George. Shane Lake is a favorite spot with two docks, and Nechako Riverside Park is a short walk to the river. Fishing is a great outdoor skill to teach your children.

Bike Riding: Riding bikes is a fantastic activity for all ages. Ginter’s Meadow has a flat, paved pathway, the riverfront walkway at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park is beautiful, and the CN Centre parking lot is perfect for early bike riders.

I’m grateful that Prince George offers so many outdoor places to explore. I’m excited to spend another summer here with my kids, and even though my daughter’s extended break has been long, seeing life through their eyes is truly wonderful.
