Prince George City Council will discuss the 2024 budget in meetings on January 22, 23, and 29 at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall. They are considering a 6.25 to 8.17 per cent tax levy increase, about a $160 hike per average household. This adjustment is based on operating budget guidelines, highlighting the need for increased taxes to maintain services and address infrastructure concerns.

The council will explore enhancements for RCMP, Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society, and Fire Rescue Services, potentially adding 1.7 per cent to the tax levy. A motion for an extra $300,000 for road rehabilitation, contributing 0.23 per cent to the tax levy, has been approved. The council will also discuss a new policy proposing a one per cent annual increase to the tax levy for infrastructure reserves.

Budget discussions will cover capital projects, including the proposed debt-funded projects for 2024: Hart Sewage Lift Station replacement ($7.3 million) and stormwater system renewal ($2.55 million).

Other agenda items include the Little Prince Train’s operating costs, with a request for $100,000 per year from Exploration Place. The proposed 2024-2028 Financial and Capital Expenditure Plans will be available on the city’s website, and written comments can be submitted until January 22 at 12 p.m. via email at cityclerk@princegeorge.ca.
