City Assembly and staff know and value the contributions of the various communities that make Vancouver one of the most suitable cities in the world. We also observe globally recognized days and important events in our past.

As a result of protections due to COVID-19, in 2022 we will carry on to support the Council-approved official celebrations and observances effectively.

We know these official celebrations and observances through a range of responses, including:

Reading proclamations or acknowledgments during a Assembly meeting if it bring into line with a Council meeting day

Featuring the formal event on vancouver.ca with a video acknowledgement and report

Providing social media responses and brilliances of City Hall and Burrard Bridge

Information icon Communities are accountable for submitting requests for edicts and City Hall and Burrard Street Bridge illuminations.

Communities may select to do more to observe or celebrate their dates, and this is at the discretion and resourcing of the community group. For example, see the Global Holocaust Memory Day video External website, opens in new tab produced by the Jewish community of Vancouver.

The formal celebrations and observances listed below have been approved by City Council.

Memorizing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

On behalf of the inhabitants of Vancouver, we show our heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96.

Her Majesty visited Canada on many occasions during her lifetime. She made her first visit to Vancouver City Hall as Princess Elizabeth with her husband, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh on October 20, 1951. In March 1983, the couple visited Vancouver City Hall again and was affectionately received by city staff and nearby residents. Her latest visit to Vancouver was in 2002.

The Canadian flag at Vancouver City Hall and on City and Park Board facilities is lowered to half-mast and will persist at half-mast until sundown on the day of her memorial service.
